So, you found your way to this blog post because there’s something inside of you that knows you can be and do better. And we know it too! That’s why we’ve put together this list of small but powerful habits that you can incorporate into your daily life right now, which will put you well on your way to becoming a better person and living a fuller and happier life!
Who doesn’t want that, right?!
Control your mind.
Meditation has grown to be pretty popular over the past decade in Western countries, with apps like Headspace and Calm making it easier than ever to try it out and be guided as a total beginner.
Meditation is all about controlling your mind, and not allowing it to run the show — because unless you consciously practice, most of the time it will run the show, and you’ll be powerless to stop it.
Taking as little as ten minutes each morning to calm your mind, and focus on taking some deep breaths will relax your whole being, and help you enjoy being present in the moment — which so many of us forget to do.
Spend less time on your phone.
Most of us are attached to our smartphones these days — they’ve become an extension of our hands.
But have you noticed that the more time you spend glued to that screen, the more anxious, frustrated, and unhappy you feel? These emotions will not only dampen your mood and state of mind, but they’ll also make you less productive.
Try limiting your phone use each day, or implement a no phone rule at a certain time in the evenings. Maybe even go an entire day without switching it on. See how you feel, and notice how much more you get done.
Stop trying to multi-task
Multitasking isn’t actually possible, so it’s time we all stopped trying to master this! Focusing on more than one thing will slow down your pace when it comes to both tasks — so you’re far better off devoting all your attention to one thing at a time. You’ll actually achieve a lot more, even if you feel like you’re going at a slower pace.
There’s only one exception to this rule — if a task pops up and it can be completed within two minutes, give yourself permission to do it and then return to what you were doing. This will give you a nice little boost which will help you tick off the rest of the items on your to-do list for the day.
Wake up earlier.
The hours of 4 am to 7 am are golden hours. You know why?
Because no one else is up yet!
While the rest of the world is sleeping, you can fit in a workout, your meditation, some reading or journaling, or even your passion project — all before you begin work.
You’ve probably heard this before, but 95% of successful people rise early. So it WORKS — that’s all you need to know.
And if you’re having trouble rising early, there’s a simple solution: get to bed earlier.
Think before you speak.
How many times do you just blurt out whatever enters your mind, without processing the consequences of what you’re about to say to someone?
This is a great way to hurt someone’s feelings, say something you don’t actually mean, and cause unnecessary drama and conflicts in your world.
The wisest and most considerate among us don’t speak on impulse — they allow themselves to think first. So start being more conscious with your words.
Figure out your strengths and use them.
In school, our weaknesses are highlighted so that we can try to improve them — the goal of this being to become a well-rounded person.
The truth is, we all have our own set of unique strengths and weaknesses. We can work on those weaknesses as much as we like, but we’ll never be able to be as good as someone who is naturally strong in this area. So it’s a far better use of our time to focus on identifying and nurturing our strengths.
What are your strengths, talents, and gifts? Make a list of what you do well, and make a plan for how you can use these talents more effectively and creatively in your life.
Respect your body.
Your body is a temple for your soul — it’s the engine that allows you to show up every day and do what you’re meant to do here on earth.
You only get one in this lifetime, so you’d better be taking care of it.
Nourish and fuel it with healthy, nutritious foods that are going to give you the energy you need to get through each day.
Move it every single day, so that you stay fit and able to live your life to the fullest. This doesn’t mean you have to join a gym or start weightlifting. You can do whatever you like. Go for brisk walks in the park each day before a walk, start doing yoga from the comfort of your home, join a local running club, or start rock climbing — whatever speaks to you is what you should do.
Understand the importance of sleep.
More than your body, your mind needs sleep in order to replenish and function properly. Put in long hours at the office for too long, ply yourself with caffeine to try to stay perky, and it’s only a matter of time before your body will revolt.
We live in a time when we feel the need to prove just how busy we are or how hard we’re hustling — and things like eating well and sleeping enough get sidelined. But if you’re not taking care of your mind and body, you won’t be able to give the people and tasks in your life your best.
You need a minimum of 6 hours sleep each night, maybe more depending on your body. Start getting this, and you’ll feel much happier and healthier within.
Practice gratitude.
Are you stopping to look around at your life right now, and noticing all the amazing things in it? Or are you one of those people who constantly looks for the next thing they can do, be, or get?
Pleasure seeking like that is the fastest way to a life of pain — because you’ll never be content. Happiness comes from being happy right now, at this moment. What are you grateful for in your life today?
Try to begin each day by making a mental note of three things you’re grateful for, or writing a little list.
